Pros
There are many reasons to look at year round school in a positive way. This school calendar can benefit both the schools, and the students. For example, year round schooling helps schools that are overcrowded because not all the students are in school at the same time. Without year round school, class sizes would increase and students would get less individualized attention. There are also several ways this new calendar benefits students. Students forget a lot of information over long summer breaks, and time is wasted at the beginning of the school year reviewing this material. With shorter breaks, students will have less of an opportunity to forget the things they have learned. Also, different tracks can be used to group students with particular needs or interests together. Students who are struggling with specific subjects can be placed on the same schedule so that teachers can target classes to their needs instead of having to teach a highly mixed class.
Cons
Although there are many benefits to year round schooling, there are also some downsides to the issue. For example, students can't get summer jobs or internships because they do not have long breaks from school. This could possibly hurt their chances of getting into competitive colleges, or make them have to work during the school year. Another downside is that families may have to arrange for supervision of students at different times if siblings are on different schedules. Families also may not be able to take a vacation because of this. A downside for the schools may be that it is hard to maintain school facilities when they are constantly in use. Schools on a year round calendar are likely to be in a worse state of repair than those who offer a summer vacation.
My Opinion
I personally think year round school is a bad idea. The main reason for this is because overall it would be hard on families. Most families have multiple students, and it would be very difficult to take a vacation. I know I would be very upset if my family could not take a vacation because of the school calendar. Also, if the kids are on different schedules, they would hardly see one another. I think year round schooling could hurt families, and cause many troubles with organization for the schools.
